About the Artist

Monika Lea Jones is a Bay Area-based Artist creating paintings, photos and custom installations.  She has executed large scale artworks for clients, projects including murals and production design for film and video.  She designs graphics for print and web to serve her clients in both web and print media.  Her collaborations with other artists, youth and community groups have resulted in murals, art and fashion shows in San Francisco, Oakland, Alameda and Berkeley, CA.

Attending college at UC Santa Cruz, Monika majored in Art History with a Religion and Visual Culture Focus. Her study abroad took place in India, where she stayed for 6 months. Also, minoring in Earth Science she travelled California studying geology and natural science, never wanting to divide herself completely between the creative and scientific minds. At Santa Cruz she was able to take several classes in the Scientific Illustration Graduate Program, including Botanical Illustration and Field Sketching.

Her paintings illuminate the modern landscape that rests upon primordial forces of nature, expressed through bright colors. Animals and celestial objects are usually the center of her compositions, rendered in acrylics and spray paint on wood panels and canvas, often utilizing wood grain and cutouts, and installation. Future commissions will include palette knife oil painting techniques and larger custom-made canvases. An ongoing digital photography project  under development focuses on reflective images of urban engineering like the MacArthur Maze, Port of Oakland and the new San Francisco Bay Bridge. Inspired by both natural and urban landscapes she seeks to bridge these worlds through investigating local history and our dreams for the future.
