This is a machette or a mock-up of a mural I will be painting this summer.
It is in conjunction with Moss Landing Marine Lab and it will eventually be installed in the Natural History Museum of Santa Cruz. So far I have created a miniature painting and a computer designed elevation view of the exhibit.

ALL FEMALE CANNABIS ART SHOW MOVES TO OAKSTERDAM'S STUDENT UNION
“Justa Space Queen” Relocates to Oaksterdam After Successful Show in Jack London Square.
After a busy three week stint at Art@theoakbook Gallery in Oakland's Jack London Square, “Justa Space Queen,” Feminized Cannabis Culture is requested to carry on the show at Oaksterdam University's Student Union. Hosted by Monika of Time is Art and Smokie of Guns and Brushes Studio, artists inspired by the cannabis movement expressing themselves as women that refuse to just stand back and watch. Both Monika and Smokie are muralists seeking to work with community groups and proudly to provide visuals for the cannabis movement. Smokie is from Chicago, New York and Puerto Rico, while Monika is from California, originating in Colorado.Here and across the country we are getting close to legalization of cannabis and “Justa Space Queen” records HER STORY with each painting.
This time the Cannabis Art will grace the walls of Oaksterdam University's Student Union. Students will now have something to study besides their textbooks while they relax and play pool between classes. The spacious facility is part of Oaksterdam's Downtown Oakland Campus and is located on Broadway just diagonal from the original one-room classroom, now the Campaign Headquarters of Prop 19's Tax and Control Initiative on the ballot this November. Donations benefitting Prop 19 will come from the auction proceeds of Smokie's piece “Women Stand Up” and from the sale of Monika's “Lake Merritt from Oaksterdam” Posters.
The newly revitalized Cannabis Cruiser Pedi-Cab, decorated with hundreds of cannabis leaves and sprayed with purple and gold veins by Monika caught the attention of many passersby. Commissioned by Oaksterdam, the Cruiser now gives VIP Tours and Publicity Events centered in Downtown Oakland. Monika's work focuses on the cannabis plant itself and portrays the strains in unique plant portraits, the most popular being Purple Kush and the spray art piece “Sweet Tooth.” The paintings made by Smokie speak to the social aspects of cannabis culture directly in the way of music and poetry. Her titles include “Pot Head,” “Puff Puff,” “420 Moment,” and “Chronic Break.” Another popular collage piece entitled “Grandma's Medicine,” is already part of a Private Collection.
Come see the show at Oaksterdam's Student Union at 1915 Broadway, Oakland CA from now until the end of the Summer 2010. While you are at it attend a tour of Oaksterdam or become a member of one of Oakland's Famous Measure Z Clubs!

Our collective intention, and the basis of collaboration between Smokie of Guns and Brushes Studio (GABS) and Monika Lea Jones of Time is Art, is to connect, upon the foundation of creativity. As female artists inspired by the cannabis movement, we express ourselves as a Feminine Cannabis Culture that refuses to just stand back and watch. Artists as we know define and record life as we live our experiences. Here we are getting close to legalization of cannabis and Justa Space Queen records HER STORY with each painting.
BIOS:
Monika Lea Jones is an Oakland-based Artist creating paintings, photos, and installations in the Bay Area. She has executed several large scale artworks, projects including murals and production design for film and video. Her collaborations with other artists, youth and community groups have resulted in murals, art, fashion and music shows in San Francisco, Oakland, Alameda and Berkeley, CA.
Her ongoing digital photography project about the MacArthur Maze, Port of Oakland and the new San Francisco Bay Bridge brings a sense of meditation to otherwise chaotic cityscapes. Inspired by both natural and urban landscapes she seeks to bridge these worlds through investigating local history and our dreams for the future.

Smokie is a self taught Artist and Puerto Rican girl, raised in big cites like New York and Chicago. She is also a Mother, Self-published Author, and Muralist whose main focus is the community and relating to the beacons of the well being of our future. She collaborated on several mural project created under the direction of instructor/activist/artist Juana Alicia Montoya, InkWorks Mural Project in West Berkeley, and in the halls of the Women's Building in San Francisco. Her work shows the joy and pain of living between the lines of a multicultural society and the art that refuses to fall between the cracks of urban decay, feeding off the moments captured. She does not restrict herself by her womanhood, she stands on it!
Her two objectives are: to give praise to the ties that bind us and to transform and redefine our relationship to wealth and resources. She assists tree planting, garden projects and environmental education volunteers at Spiral Gardens, Urban Releaf and interns at Oaksterdam University. Smokie wants to remind you: "What you give, is what folks remember."

Well the Oaksterdam Painting has been up for more than a year now!
A great Article has been written about it called: "What Criteria should be used to select public art?" on A Better Oakland. I am very proud to have worked on this controversial project and I am please that it opened up a discussion about public art.
